Jim Grill, Team Coach
Residence: Neshanic Station, N.J.
A passionate devotee of cycling, Jim is also a walking encyclopedia of the sport, and one of the most successful coaches in U.S. cycling. He was introduced to the sport by his father, who raced the track in the days when every major city had a velodrome. Back then Newark had two.
In 1958, when fixed-gears were still standard equipment at events like the Tour of Somerville, Jim embarked on his own racing career. By 1968, his racing gave way to coaching when he took a local club of Juniors to the Nationals in southern California. He continued coaching local riders until he was selected the 1972-73 National Team coach, and took riders like John Howard and Jim Ochowitz to the Worlds in Barcelona, Spain.
Jim was called upon again in the fall of 1977, when Eddie Borysewicz (otherwise known as Eddie B.) tapped him to be National Junior Team coach. For the next four years Jim coached the National Teams, where some famous names came under his tutelage, most notably Greg LeMond and Andy Hampsten. Jim returned to coach the National Team again in 1988-89, taking a teenage Marty Nothstein to his first World Championships. In the spring of 1989, overseeing the National Team training camps, Jim worked with some other famous names like Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie, and Chann McRae.
Jim has coached riders in just about every discipline on the road and track, and he’s taken teams to Denmark, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and Venezuela. His riders have raced to numerous titles, including National Champions, Junior World Champions, and State and District Champions. He’s seen his riders go on to compete in the Olympics, the Giro d’Italia, and the Tour de France.
In the Grill family, Jim isn’t the only one who knows the sport inside out. His wife, Paula, is an expert in her own right when it comes to cycling. A UCI Commissar and one of the country’s top officials, she can be seen officiating locally, and at top national events like the Tour of Somerville, the First Union USPRO Championship, and the San Francisco Grand Prix.
Mike Rosenhaus, Team Manager/Coach
Residence: Morristown, N.J.
DOB: August 31, 1962
Height: 5′-10″
Weight: 155 lbs.
Category: Senior 2/Masters 35+
Racing since 1978
It would take too long to compile all of Mike’s results over the years. After all, he began racing when he was about 15 years old, and his career victories alone would probably number over 100. At 16 he earned a place on the Junior National Team, where he was coached by Jim Grill, and where he met Andy Hampsten who was his roommate at the National Team Training Center. During these years, Mike was a track specialist.
In 1980, he became the Junior National Pursuit Champion, and in that same year competed in the Junior World’s in Mexico City. From 1981 through 1984, he was a member of the Senior National Track Team, and as a Senior, he claimed the bronze medal in the 1982 National Team Pursuit Championship, and another bronze medal in the 1984 National Points Race Championship.
Rather than follow his National Team teammates into careers racing in Europe, Mike went on to get his Masters in Classics from the University of Southern California. However, he never turned his back on the sport. He raced successfully in California for several years before returning to his home state of New Jersey, where he began racing once again for his former coach, Jim Grill. With Mike leading CJCT, it became the team to watch in regional racing. In other words, when there was action up the road, Mike was in the middle of it.
A three-time Garden State Cup winner, a two-time New Jersey State Road Race Champion, Mike has won over a dozen district championship titles on the road and track in New Jersey. More recently, he was 1st at the 2001 Harvey Black Memorial, and 2nd in the 2002 Ronde Van Mullica. Still competitive after 25 years of racing, in each of the past several seasons he’s finished in the top-ten in half the races he’s entered.

In addition to being a bike patrol cop and vice president of the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association, Dave is the primary organization guy behind CJCT. Many of our sponsors are with us as a result of Dave’s legwork. A lifelong hockey player, he turned to cycling several years ago to increase his fitness. And being naturally athletic, it wasn’t long before he was competing in mountain bike races. He was the 2001 North Jersey Series Expert Champion, and started road racing that same year. In only his second season on the road he upgraded to Category 3. During the 2003 season he’ll be looking forward to becoming a Category 2.
Lou Schimmel
Residence: Clifton, NJ
DOB: July 5, 1972
Height: 6′-1″
Weight: 165 lbs.
Category: Pro/Senior 1
Racing since 1991
A former pro racer, Lou has competed in all the First Union events, including Trenton and Core States. In 2001, he was ranked 11th in the nation in USPro/Elite Criterium rankings by USA Cycling. Lou started cycling competitively at the University of Colorado at Boulder, but didn’t begin racing seriously until 1996, while he was in chiropractic school in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1999, he placed 2nd in the Collegiate National Criterium Championships only millimeters behind the winner. This past year, 2002, Lou had four victories including the New Jersey State Time Trial Championship and the Harvey Black Memorial Race. He was 2nd at the New Jersey State Criterium Championships, placed 2nd overall in the Garden State Cup Series, and was the winner of the Zeke Trophy.

DOB: July 2, 1952
Height: 5′-7″
Weight: 140 lbs.
Category: Senior 2/Masters 50+
Racing since 1990
A former elite runner who once ran a marathon in 2 hours 22 minutes, and whose two-mile record of 9 minutes 17 seconds still stands at Morristown High School, Richie began riding road bikes in the mid-1980s. In addition to owning Northeastern Hardware, the title sponsor of CJCT, he’s also the oldest member of the team. And as grueling as cycling is, Richie possesses an eager willingness to suffer. In fact he seems to enjoy it. Put a hill in a race, the harder and steeper the better, and Richie will be a contender. He’s finished the High Point Hill Climb in 2nd place on five different occasions. And when the State Road Race was contested on one of its toughest courses ever several years ago, with over half the field dropping out, he finished 10th. By the way, these results are against fields where most of the riders are half his age.

A former Garden State Cup winner and runner-up, Dave began racing again in 2001 after a considerable hiatus. Dave has been a member of the Central Jersey Cycling Team since 1990, the same year he finished second in the New Jersey State Road Race Championship to Mike Rosenhaus. Having seen Mike’s consistently winning ways that year, Dave asked to join Mike’s team. And for the following two years, he and Mike were the core riders of a team that dominated the local racing scene. In 2001, he had several strong finishes including a 5th at the Pine Cone Road Race, and a 2nd at the Phillipsburg Criterium. During the 2002 season, Dave placed 5th at the Firecracker Criterium in Augusta, 9th at the Tour de Lamb in the Branch Brook Park Series, and in the Masters 35+ race at the Denville Criterium he finished 2nd.
